The Norwegian Footmarch
Background
The march was first held in 1915 as a test of marching endurance for soldiers in the Norwegian Army. A strategic goal was to be able to move larger units of troops over a great distance swiftly and in a manner that enabled them to efficiently be prepared for combat – even after the march by carrying their rucksack /weaponry of 11 kg. The goal today is to stimulate the general interest of marching over extended distances amongst military and civilian personnel.
Test guidelines and requirements
The test is a 30 km (18.64-mile) march (march/run) with a rucksack weighing 11 kg (24.25 lbs). The rucksack must weigh at least 11 kg at both start and finish line.
Rucksack of approved military model must be used. Civilian participants may use a different type of backpack.
Standards
- Males under the age of 34 must complete the 18.6 mile march in under 4 hours, 30 minutes (14:30 splits).
- Females under the age of 34 must complete the 18.6 mile march in under 4 hours, 50 minutes (15:35 splits).

Last Year's March:
Relentless Resilience: Last Year’s Norwegian Footmarch on the Genesee River Trail
Last year, over 50 determined marchers braved the elements to tackle the Norwegian Footmarch along the snowy, picturesque Genesee River Trail. The icy winds and challenging terrain only fueled their resolve as they embarked on the 18.6-mile endurance challenge, cheered on by the presence of ranking military officers lending their support and inspiration. Along the route, snack and beverage stations every 3 miles became lifelines of encouragement, offering warm camaraderie and much-needed energy.
As marchers crossed the finish line, they were greeted with an abundance of fruit, hearty snacks, and the shared pride of completing a feat few dare to attempt. The event was not just a test of physical strength but a celebration of discipline, community, and perseverance, cementing its place as a cornerstone tradition for Rochester’s military and civilian community alike. Will you rise to the challenge this year?
